What cause kidney infections?

Are there things that we do that explanation kidney infections? I know drinking soda can cause them, but I be wondering what else. Like holding your pee in for while or not completely empty you bladder.
Also what about unteated ones, what cause them to get worse and how long does it thieve before it get to bad.What cause kidney infections?
Kidney infections are commonly caused by bladder infections that are not properly treated. I am not aware of soda cause kidney infections.
